Newton Youth Hockey
One of the nation's foremost experts in the prevention of sports-related injuries, Dr. Alan Ashare has made precious contributions to the USA Hockey Coaching Education Program on and off the ice.
During the past 20 years Ashare has contributed significantly to the Newton (Mass.) Youth Hockey program, and served as its president for eight years. Certified as an Advanced Level coach through USA Hockey, Ashare has also served as a member of the Massachusetts Hockey Board of Directors since 1985 and a member of the USA Hockey BOD since 1988. He chaired the Certification Committee of the Hockey Equipment Certification Council from 1988 to 1997, and the USA Hockey Safety and Protective Equipment Committee since 1988.

The Walter Yaciuk Award is presented annually by USA Hockey's Coaching Education Program to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the program during many years of service as a volunteer.

Massachusetts Hockey is proud and honored to have Dr. Alan Ashare on it's Board of Directors. Shortly after the Travis Roy injury, together with Bob Rogers they began the Heads Up, Don't Duck ! Program in 1996. Putting together a inexpensive brochure and poster, followed by an video tape. The word spread and soon they had requests from other USA Hockey affiliates throughout the country to reproduce the brochure with the other affiliates logos. Although the brochure was crude the message was clear and precise.

Shortly after, USA Hockey launched it's Heads Up Hockey Program.
